Ladurée, macarons, NYC

You won’t find the new saveurs de Noël macaron listed on the menu yet but if you ask nicely enough the staff at Ladurée NYC might be able to find some in the basement!

It is my new favorite macaron! The “Christmas flavors” are chocolate, candied clementine peel, cinnamon, star anise, and vanilla. The person who helped me at Ladurée today said it was “chocolate, vanilla, cinnamon, and calamansi” but I double checked in the holiday collection guide and it confirmed the first description (no calamansi). This delicious macaron is very rich, much like a brownie.

Here is a shot of two “Christmas flavors” macarons, two chestnut, one blood orange with ginger, and a hazelnut guimauve.

The Strand is a new Biergarten in Astoria that just opened today. In addition to beer, they have Brooklyn Soda Works on tap and kombucha ale. I had the spiced plum soda ($4.00) and the Mava Roka kombucha ale (7% ABV and $6.00)

The macarons at Panya can be a little dry and are often gummy, but the wasabi macaron I had today was surprisingly palatable. They are $1.50 per piece and should be brought to room temperature before consumption.

Beard Papa’s is selling mouthwatering autumnal pumpkin cream puffs. They are filled with their signature cream custard but are topped with a fragrant pumpkin purée/Belgian white chocolate paste and a few pumpkin seeds. This special treat reminds me of a mont-blanc aux marrons.

Blue crabs have been bigger and more plentiful this year because of warmer ocean temperatures last winter. I bought a dozen of some very frisky live blue crabs at N.Y. Supermarket in Elmhurst, Queens for $6.00

20121001-221148.jpg
I boiled them for about one minute before removing them and placing them in the vaporera I use for steaming tamales. Each crab was positioned upside down and covered in Old Bay seasoning before being steamed for 12 minutes.

After steaming for 12 minutes, the crabs were ready to eat!

Sarah Obraitis told me today that horse on the menu was a “figment” of someone’s imagination and that they served it once, like, “weeks ago”.

We ordered clam chowder (amazing), beef tartare sandwich (SO good and reminded me of a fatty tuna sushi roll), the frisée with lardons (just OK and came with a little green caterpillar in the greens), and the rabbit terrine (also amazing).

M. Wells Dinette was great but I totally miss the old M. Wells and their maple pie… snail and marrow… green salad… soft shell crab BLT…
