Broadway, Grand Opening, Ladurée, new york, soho

Ladurée Soho (398 W Broadway) had its soft opening this weekend and will be open to the public on Wednesday, February 5, 2014. It will feature a full-service restaurant and an outdoor patio. Though currently unavailable, reservations can be made at OpenTable here. This new flagship location has started making pastries and viennoiseries previously impossible to find anywhere in North America. Scroll down to see the Saint-Honoré rose and the pistachio religieuse that I bought yesterday. Screen Shot 2014-02-02 at 7.47.49 AM

I love the new macaron box – according to an employee at Ladurée, it features a “very French” joke about the post-Christmas sales season. “0% OFF SALE!” I thought it was surprisingly cheeky for such a traditional fabricant de douceurs

Cronuts at Paris Baguette

Paris Baguette in Korea Town is now making their own version of the cronut. They’re called croissant doughnuts and they are available daily at noon and 3PM. Only about 30 croissant doughnuts are made at each time and they sell out within 15 minutes.

Just like all the other pastries on the wooden shelves, you have to wait for an employee to put the tray of croissant doughnuts on the shelf and then you place them in a paper box with tongs. I made the mistake of waiting by the counter to order.

The batch I had had a little lemon zest on top. The lemon helped balance the richness of the fried dough and cream.

I’m at the Cantonese dim sum class at the China Institute in New York City right now! The egg tarts came out great and we’re about to fry up the turnip cakes!

Beet ice cream with goat cheese and candied pistachios

OddFellows Ice Cream Co. in Williamsburg has some very special new flavors, including celery and beet with goat cheese and candied pistachios. I stopped by yesterday to try them both. The celery sorbet was too sweet for me but the beet ice cream was fantastic! Check their Facebook page for daily flavors.

sprouted ice cream from Atera

I was thinking about making some ice cream today and decided to try out something like the ice cream with live sprouted grains that I had last year at Atera.

It’s hard to get a spot at the restaurant but if you email them on Monday, you should be able to get a table at their lounge, which is in the basement area below the restaurant. Some of the smaller dishes and almost all the famous amuse-bouches from the restaurant are available à la carte. I’m going there this Thursday and will be sure to post about my visit!

Cowgirl Creamery Contest

Some of my absolute favorite artisan cheeses are made by Cowgirl Creamery in Pt. Reyes, California. You can find these excellent cheeses in New York City at almost every Whole Foods location.

A few weeks ago I entered a contest on the creamery’s Facebook page to win some of their cheeses! I had to submit a video of myself singing a song about cheese to the tune of Sweet Dreams by the Eurythmics.

It goes like this: “Sweet dreams are made of cheese, who am I to diss a Brie? I cheddar the world and the feta cheese, everybody’s looking for Stilton.”

Here is my video:

Screen Shot 2013-06-30 at 11.41.11 AMI guess people on Facebook liked the video because I just found out that I won the contest! I am so excited to try the cheeses that they’re going to send! I will post pictures of the package when it arrives!

matcha green tea Kit Kats and Crunch bars at Mitsuwa

Mitsuwa in New Jersey is the largest Japanese grocery store in the United States. They have an amazing food court that includes ramen, tempura, soba, and gyoza shops. You can also find incredible wagashi at the Minamoto Kitchoan counter.

The summer Umaimono food festival vendors are starting to set up inside Mitsuwa and one of the first ones I saw was this matcha green tea frozen yogurt stand. There is one combo that includes a mini slice of matcha cheesecake!

If you walk down the candy aisle, you will find a giant wall of green tea Crunch bars and Kit Kats!

chorizo caramel ice cream at OddFellows

OddFellows Ice Cream Co. is serving chorizo caramel ice cream! The smoky chorizo flavor isn’t immediately present but after you let it melt in your mouth a bit, it is unmistakable! Maybe they’ll come up with calamares en su tinta with fudge like Heladería Islandia in Xixón!

I just had the best ice cream of my life at Victory Garden! Their goat’s milk herbal ice cream (shown below) and their chocolate rosemary blend were both incredibly delicious, it was like a dream come true! I added cacao nibs, my favorite ice cream topping. They have other toppings, too, like mastic wafers and honeycomb candy.
