Pajunia in Elmhurst doesn’t serve savory jeon pancakes but it does have extremely delicious hotteok! This Korean winter treat is filled with cinnamon, honey, walnuts, sesame seeds, brown sugar and crushed peanuts. You can get 4 of these sweet, buttery filled “nut cakes” for $5.

While hiking in the Hudson River Valley, just an hour outside of New York City, we came across few wild wineberry bushes. Wineberries are a species of raspberry with origins in eastern Asia. They have very large, hairy calices, as you can see in the photo. A man we met on the trail told us that these berries were once used to make wine, since grapes do not grow well in this region.
They were a little bit bitter — I wonder if they weren’t quite ripe yet.
Here is a view of the Hudson River looking south from one of the white Breakneck Ridge trails.

The man at Patel Bros. grocery in Jackson Heights, Queens told me they didn’t have any green chili powder or lime powder, but they did have this powdered mint chutney mix. The first ingredient was salt, perfect for a batch of potato chips!
I don’t have a mandolin so I used my Kyocera ceramic knife to slice the potatoes as thinly as possible.
I microwaved them for 3 minutes and then checked them to see if any were burning. I think it took about another minute before they were crispy. No oil, just non-ionizing microwave radiation!
They weren’t bad but I had to dump a lot more chutney mix and some raw green chili to make it flavorful enough for my taste. It looks like I might have to go to India after all!

I loved yesterday’s lettuce popsicles so much that I stopped by the supermarket today to pick up some vegetables for another batch. This time I liquefied a few perfectly ripe tomatoes with the juice of 6 lemons and a little simple syrup. The resulting popsicles came out even better than the lettuce ones!
