Broadway, Grand Opening, Ladurée, new york, soho

Ladurée Soho (398 W Broadway) had its soft opening this weekend and will be open to the public on Wednesday, February 5, 2014. It will feature a full-service restaurant and an outdoor patio. Though currently unavailable, reservations can be made at OpenTable here. This new flagship location has started making pastries and viennoiseries previously impossible to find anywhere in North America. Scroll down to see the Saint-Honoré rose and the pistachio religieuse that I bought yesterday. Screen Shot 2014-02-02 at 7.47.49 AM

I love the new macaron box – according to an employee at Ladurée, it features a “very French” joke about the post-Christmas sales season. “0% OFF SALE!” I thought it was surprisingly cheeky for such a traditional fabricant de douceurs

I found murta berry sauce at Puro Chile today. In addition to gourmet Chilean food products, they sell hundreds of varieties of Chilean wines and beautiful jewelry and accessories.

Beard Papa’s is selling mouthwatering autumnal pumpkin cream puffs. They are filled with their signature cream custard but are topped with a fragrant pumpkin purée/Belgian white chocolate paste and a few pumpkin seeds. This special treat reminds me of a mont-blanc aux marrons.

I recently had the most amazing dinner of my life at Atera. The $165 tasting menu included almost 30 different items. Here are some photos of my favorites.

Sarah Obraitis told me today that horse on the menu was a “figment” of someone’s imagination and that they served it once, like, “weeks ago”.

We ordered clam chowder (amazing), beef tartare sandwich (SO good and reminded me of a fatty tuna sushi roll), the frisée with lardons (just OK and came with a little green caterpillar in the greens), and the rabbit terrine (also amazing).

M. Wells Dinette was great but I totally miss the old M. Wells and their maple pie… snail and marrow… green salad… soft shell crab BLT…

I was a contestant in Maharlika’s first annual Balut Contest last weekend. The embryos seemed to be a little more developed than the ones I have had at Maharlika.

20120902-111818.jpg
Originally I entered the contest just to eat free balut — I have never been a very fast eater. But when el momento de la verdad arrived, something came over me and I really wanted to win!

20120902-111826.jpg
In five minutes I was able to shove 11 baluts down my throat. I almost choked a couple of times. It seemed like the guy next to me, Wayne Algenio, (the guy who won) wasn’t even chewing them! He ate 18!

Chongos zamoranos is a sweet curd dessert from Zamora in Michoacán, Mexico.

20120721-171635.jpg
Nixtamal provides tortillas to many restaurants in New York such as La Esquina, Choza Taquería, and even Nobu. The owners, Shauna Page and Fernando Ruiz, make their own corn masa using a method called nixtamalization. The corn is soaked in mineral lime, which increases its nutritional value, allows it to be more easily ground, kills fungus, and improves flavor. In front of Nixtamal there are a few stalks of corn growing in a planter.

The Minamoto Kitchoan kiosk at Mitsuwa in New Jersey is selling a special hands-on summer wagashi. I think it’s arrowroot with agar agar and extra water, mizu. The jelly prism is placed inside a plastic box and pushed through a screen that cuts it into small, spaghetti-like ribbons. A small packet of molasses is included and could be used as a sauce for the jelly noodles. The whole set is only $6.

how to season, Molcajete, new york, NYC, recipe

20120717-163021.jpg
A few months ago MexGrocer.com had a huge blow out sale and so I bought a real lava rock molcajete. It was kind of hard to find a real one even in New York. Many of the ones I found in Jackson Heights and Corona were decorative serving dishes made out of cement, not lava rock. It took me at least three months to season the one I bought online! I read on The Mija Chronicles that you should do a few turns of dry beans, then dry corn, dry rice, wet rice, and finally the spices. The many rounds help get rid of gritty pieces that might get mixed into your food. Today I finally got to the spices round!

20120717-163031.jpg
I ground some garlic, dried epazote, ancho chiles, and salt. The resulting paste was very fragrant and tasty!
